In the history of the Catholic Church, there has been a number of occasions when, due to power interests, the Popes stood against each other and disputed their legitimacy. At the beginning of the 15th century, this papal schism escalated so much that even three opposing popes held the office at once. To solve the situation, the Roman Emperor Sigismund convened the Council of Constance.
The pontificate of Hippolytus of Rome in the 3rd century is referred to as the first illegitimate pontiff. The last anti-pope was the Prince of Savoy, Felix V - for the ambiguity of the name order, also called Amadeus. For the last time, the question of the papal schism was raised by the current Pope Francis for formal reasons. However, the previous Pope Benedict XVI stressed that, after his resignation, he would submit completely to the new Pope.
It is not always clear who to label as an anti-pope. According to different points of view, it is possible to speak about 25 to 40 anti-popes.
The timeline includes the anti-popes for all periods of papal schism.
