In the early 1970s, George Lucas began writing various versions of a story about the encounter of good and evil in space. Star Wars: A New Hope was shot at relatively low cost, but with special effects.
After its success, Lucas began to write not only another story, but around the characters like Luke Skywalker, Master Yoda, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-wan Kenobi and others, he formed a new fantastic world. Star Wars movies were commercially successful, so in the next episodes Lucas could still increase the budget and expand the use of film effects.
After the purchase of Star Wars franchise from George Lucas, Lucasfilm continues to make films as a part of Walt Disney group. The eighth episode was released in December 2017, next part of film serial is prepared for December 2019. Lucasfilm also works on next trilogy of episodes.
The timeline features moving pictures from the Star Wars main saga and new films from Anthology series. For comparison, the production budgets of the episodes can be seen on the timeline.
