According the Constitution of India, the president is head of state. Executive power is vested in the prime minister and his/her Council of Ministers.
After the independence of India in 1947, the first Prime Minister was Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru was assassinated in office, as was his daughter Indira Gandhi later. PM Shastri died in Tashkent (former Soviet Union), death reported to be a cardiac arrest.
The longest-serving PM's of India were Jawaharlal Nehru (nearly 17 years) and Manmohan Singh (10 years).
